This week I have mostly been watching.. (The Killing Joke Review)
It's been a while since I last posted. I've been so busy lately and I have far too many projects on the go. So here's a quick little post, hopefully there will be more here soon.
This week I have mostly been watching... Black Butler, Stranger Things and The Killing Joke.
I'm really enjoying Black Butler, there's nothing like a good bit of manga. Seasons one and two are available on Netflix. Victorian London, revenge, hot demon butler, what more do you need to know! I am loving it!! There are some deliberately suggestive sections in it which are completely hilarious! A really fun watch!
I've been looking forward for the return of Winona Rider for some time now and she is fabulous in this! She really comes into her own from episode three onways. A missing child, a government conspiracy, aliens and awesome 80's music. Pure gold. Everyone is talking about it right now. Netflix original series, there's what 6 episodes? Just watch it, go, now, waaatch it.
I'm a huge Batman fan, always have been and I have never been more disappointed with a film than I am with the Killing Joke. Bitterly disappointed. It fell so flat. SPOILER WARNING> My first issue was the content of the first 30 mins of the film. The Killing Joke is a rather short comic, yes, but its glorious, award winning and truely astounding. The first thirty minutes of the film were not drawn from the comic, fair enough I can understand that you would need to pad it out, but it really had zero connection to the content of the book and it didn't enrich the story at all!
My next issue is one that has been quite contentious, I've heard many people discussing it. The Batman/Batgirl sex scene. Ok. WHY?? Why would you put that in, it doesn't work, the way that its presented just makes it laughable. Its clear that Batman is her superior and she respects him and is attracted to him, but you get no indication that the feeling is mutual! And then suddenly they're having sex on a rooftop? It was fairly shoddy. The whole persona of Batman in this film is very flat and undeveloped. Obviously he has fewer lines than Batgirl as she has more scenes, but he's just so.. meh!
The Joker, the biggest Batman villain there is. And some would say that this is his defining comic. You learn so much about the character of the Joker in this story, his life, his background, his motivation, the reason behind his hatred of Batman, his insanity. Insanity is the main theme of this film. It just is, so why on earth would you trim down the greatest Joker speech in the history of Batman? His explanation of insanity. His understanding of where he is in relation to the rest of the world. I love Mark Hamill, I really do, I think he's wonderful and he is a marvelous Joker, but his performance in the Killing Joke is really sub-par. "I'm just going to say these words, but not perform them and not truly get into the character". So disappointing.
If you want to see what Joker SHOULD have been in this film, I would like to direct you to this video, skip to 0:50 because that's where the action really starts. This is Troy Baker, the other joker, doing his performance of the speech from the Killing Joke. This is what the film could have and should have been.
And the art? Very much reminiscent of the animated series, but guys, we're not in the nineties anymore. The Killing Joke is NOT a story for kids, its a gritty, hard hitting tale we should have dark, gritty art. Like Gotham Knight, like Under the Red Hood, Son of Batman, Batman: Year One.
And the ending? I don't even know what to think, by that point I had just given up on the film. Honestly? I wouldn't bother watching it. What are you even doing DC Comics?
What are you even doing?
